Abstract

During their service life, pavements are influenced by the various environmental and traffic conditions. In order to better characterize the effects of these conditions, both field and lab tests are required. Such a characterization should focus on both pavement material properties, as well as reaction of the pavement structure to the destructive processes that occur during the pavements service life. To accelerate pavement damage and to shorten the test time, pavements are subjected to repeated load applications simulating traffic conditions. This paper presents the benefits and limitations related to the Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) facilities, including linear and circular track facilities, test roads (tracks) and mobile load simulators. Selected APTs, located in the USA and in other countries are compared. In addition, a brief historical overview is presented in conjunction with the researcher’s personal experience.
